The Archival records for the lands at Crampscastle date back to 1230 https://www.logainm.ie/en/47859. A building called 'Crumpiscastell' existed on this townland as early as 1308-9. This building was used by the Earls of Ormond as one of the principal courthouses for the County Palatine of Tipperary. The Earls of Ormond's courts dispensed justice from 1328 until 1621 (when the 'regalities' were withdrawn from the Earls by King James I). Calendar of Ormonde Deeds 1410 - 1542 refer to court cases at the County Court of the Liberty of Tipperay at Crumpiscastell. After 1542, we can find no further references to Cramps Castle being used as a court. Collapse in summer 1893 of west facade and southern wall, as a result of previous removal of 'meagre quoins' from north-west and south-west corners. The stair-turret was subsequently vertically fissured. The first floor would appear to have been used as the court house. It was a first floor 'hall house'. The upper two stories appear to date from the late 1500s. The dressed stone at this level is of high quality, with large grand fireplaces. Part of the fireplace on the top floor survives. These two upper floors would have provided the very best level of comfort for the Elizabethan period in rural Ireland. Three upper floors are served by private latrines, within a latrine tower. The main entrance to the castle would have faced westward, with a spiral stairwell, lobby, front door, porters lodge/guardroom, and murder-hole shaft centrally above the main door. Research has established that Cramps Castle was a building of significant importance, with upper level dwelling, and masonry work of the highest quality and standard. The residential farm has the benefit of a well presented 3 bedroom cottage , The Ruins of Crampscastle, A large array of useful farm buildings and the added benefit of the remains of a detached Rofab BungalowDirections
